Old timer clock shop austin1/22/2024 In addition to comparing the physical traits of the connected cubes I tested, I took extensive notes on the usability and quality of the associated app, focusing on legibility, convenience, and utility. Software: Some cubes are connected, meaning they sync with a phone app to track solve times, provide tutorials, and more.During testing, I made a point of noting the sounds of each cube I used. Sound: A given cube’s sound profile isn’t necessarily a good thing or a bad thing-much like with mechanical keyboard switches, it’s a matter of personal preference-but each model makes a slightly different sound and produces different volume levels regardless of how you adjust them.Good cubes instead slide the out-of-place side into position as you move the other, allowing you to keep your flow going throughout your solve. In this scenario, if the cube you’re using doesn’t have an inner mechanism that allows the pieces to slide easily past each other, it can lock up. When you’re moving layers of a cube quickly, often you begin to move one of the sides before another fully gets into place. Corner cutting: Despite the negative connotations the term might evoke, corner cutting is a positive trait in speed cubes. The cubes we tested range from about $10 to $80 at the time of publication. It’s possible to spend a fair amount of cash on a single cube, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find quality options at affordable prices. Price: Like many specialty hobbies, speed cubing can be a money pit. All the cubes we tested (except for the original Rubik’s Cube) had the ability to tweak one or more of these settings to get it closer to personal preference, but some cubes’ adjustments were easier to use or had more options than others.
